Canna edulis RS3 resistant starch (Ce-RS3) is a type 3 resistant starch derived from the rhizomes of the plant Canna edulis. It is an insoluble dietary fiber with high resistance to enzymatic digestion and notable prebiotic properties. Ce-RS3 has been shown in animal and human studies to improve blood lipid profiles by lowering total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. It also modulates gut microbiota composition—enriching beneficial bacteria such as Faecalibacterium, Agathobacter, Bifidobacterium, and Roseburia—and increases short-chain fatty acid production through fermentation in the colon[1][2][4]. Ce-RS3 demonstrates anti-obesity effects by reducing weight gain and metabolic inflammation in animal models[4]. Additionally, it has shown potential neuroprotective effects in Parkinson’s disease models by reducing neuroinflammation and neuronal apoptosis[6]. Its mechanism of action involves acting as a prebiotic dietary fiber that alters host-microbiota interactions to regulate lipid metabolism, reduce systemic inflammation, support antioxidant activity (e.g., increasing glutathione peroxidase), and influence amino acid/lipid metabolism pathways[1][2][4][6].
