Overview
Cannabidiol is a non-psychoactive phytocannabinoid derived from the *Cannabis sativa* plant. It is a major component of cannabis and accounts for up to 40% of the plant's extract. Medically, cannabidiol acts as an anticonvulsant and is approved as an adjunctive treatment for seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, Dravet syndrome, and tuberous sclerosis complex in patients one year of age and older. Its mechanism involves modulation of endocannabinoid system signaling but does not produce the psychoactive effects typical of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Cannabidiol has also been studied for symptomatic relief in multiple sclerosis-related spasticity and neuropathic pain when combined with THC as nabiximols (Sativex)[1][5][6]. Research continues into its potential benefits for other neurological disorders.
