cannabidiol (vaporized)

Cannabidiol (vaporized) is an investigational research formulation of the phytocannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) at a concentration of approximately 11-12%, delivered via inhalation of vaporized cannabis flower. Developed by the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) for the acute treatment of migraine, its mechanism of action is thought to involve the inhibition of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) release and CGRP-induced nitric oxide release, as well as the suppression of trigeminovascular neurons and cortical spreading depression. In a Phase 2 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial (NCT04360044), the CBD-dominant formulation was evaluated for its ability to provide pain freedom and relief from most bothersome symptoms. While the CBD-only arm did not demonstrate statistical superiority over placebo at the 2-hour mark, the study provided significant data on the efficacy of inhaled cannabinoids in migraine management, particularly when used in combination with THC.
