Cannabidiol valine hemisuccinate (CBDVHS), also known as SBI-200, is a proprietary, synthetic small molecule analog and prodrug of cannabidiol (CBD). Developed through a collaboration between the University of Mississippi and Eli Labs and licensed by Skye Bioscience (formerly Emerald Bioscience), CBDVHS is an amino acid ester designed to enhance the pharmacokinetic profile, solubility, and tissue penetration of CBD. Unlike natural CBD, which typically exhibits low affinity for cannabinoid receptors, CBDVHS acts as a CB1 receptor agonist. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that CBDVHS possesses superior and more sustained anti-seizure activity compared to CBD. It is also being investigated for ocular delivery to treat retinal diseases such as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, as it has shown the ability to penetrate all chambers of the eye. Furthermore, CBDVHS has demonstrated analgesic potential in animal models of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN).
