Overview

Cannabidivarin is a rare, non-intoxicating cannabinoid found in Cannabis sativa. Structurally similar to cannabidiol (CBD) but with a shorter side chain, it is considered a minor cannabinoid due to its low natural abundance. Cannabidivarin does not produce psychoactive effects and has demonstrated anticonvulsant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties in preclinical studies. Its mechanism of action primarily involves modulation of transient receptor potential channels—specifically TRPV1, TRPV2, and TRPA1—rather than the classical cannabinoid receptors CB1 or CB2. It also acts as an inverse agonist at GPR6 and antagonist at GPR55. Cannabidivarin is being investigated for several neurological conditions including epilepsy (especially treatment-resistant forms), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Rett syndrome, Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), Crohn’s disease/inflammatory bowel diseases, neuropathic pain associated with HIV, and other inflammatory or neurodevelopmental disorders. The compound has been developed synthetically for research purposes by GW Pharmaceuticals under the code name GWP42006[1][3][4][5][6].
