**Cannabis** is a non-single-entity botanical drug material obtained from Cannabis plants and containing a variable mixture of phytocannabinoids, terpenes, and other constituents. Its principal psychoactive constituent is typically delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, while cannabidiol and many other cannabinoids may also be present at highly variable concentrations. THC-mediated effects are principally produced through cannabinoid receptor 1 and cannabinoid receptor 2 signaling; therefore, the clinical pharmacology, efficacy, psychoactivity, and safety of cannabis depend substantially on chemotype, THC-to-CBD ratio, dose, route, and product preparation. Cannabis has been studied in defined inhaled, smoked, oral, and encapsulated preparations for pain, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer cachexia, respiratory symptoms, and inflammatory arthritis, but cannabis itself is not one standardized pharmaceutical chemical entity.
