Overview

Cannabis + tobacco refers to the co-administration of two psychoactive substances—cannabis (marijuana) and tobacco (nicotine-containing leaves)—typically by smoking them together in a single product such as a "spliff" or "moke." This combination is common in many regions and exposes users to the pharmacological effects of both drugs. Cannabis acts primarily via delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on cannabinoid receptors in the brain, producing euphoria, altered perception, and potential therapeutic effects such as pain relief. Tobacco contains nicotine, which acts on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors leading to stimulation and dependence. When used together, there is evidence that the acute subjective high from cannabis is not significantly altered by adding tobacco; however, memory impairment from cannabis may be reduced when combined with tobacco[1][2]. The combination increases exposure to harmful combustion products and carcinogens found in both substances[3]. Co-use raises risks for dependence on one or both drugs and complicates cessation efforts due to overlapping withdrawal symptoms[3][4][5]. The practice also increases risk for respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)[4], cardiovascular harm[3], psychological dependence[4], and possibly metabolic syndrome through increased sugar intake[7].
