Overview

Cannabis extract refers to a concentrated preparation derived from the Cannabis sativa plant that contains a range of cannabinoids—primarily delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD)—as well as other minor cannabinoids such as cannabigerol (CBG), cannabinol (CBN), and others. These extracts are used for both recreational and medicinal purposes. The primary mechanism of action involves binding to cannabinoid receptors in the brain and peripheral nervous system, modulating neurotransmitter release and affecting pain perception, muscle spasticity, appetite, nausea/vomiting control, inflammation, anxiety levels, seizure activity, and more[1][2][4]. Medicinally regulated cannabis extracts such as Sativex (nabiximols) are approved in some countries for treating multiple sclerosis-related spasticity and neuropathic pain[2]. Other uses with varying levels of evidence include chemotherapy-induced nausea/vomiting; chronic pain; epilepsy/seizure disorders; inflammatory bowel disease; sleep disorders; anxiety disorders; HIV/AIDS-related cachexia or weight loss; Tourette's syndrome; PTSD[5][6][7]. The psychoactive effects are primarily due to THC acting on CB1 receptors in the central nervous system. CBD is non-psychoactive but has anti-inflammatory/anticonvulsant properties through modulation of various receptor systems including CB2 receptors[4][9].
