Drug intelligence / Profile preview
CannEpil is a phytocannabinoid-derived medicinal product developed by Argent BioPharma (formerly MGC Pharmaceuticals) for the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy. It is formulated as an oral oil-based solution containing a standardized 20:1 ratio of cannabidiol (CBD) to delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The therapeutic effect is primarily attributed to CBD's ability to reduce neuronal hyperexcitability by acting as an antagonist at G protein-coupled receptor 55 (GPR55) and by desensitizing transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) channels. Additionally, the low concentration of THC acts as a partial agonist at CB1 and CB2 receptors, potentially contributing to the overall anticonvulsant profile through the "entourage effect." CannEpil is currently available in jurisdictions like Australia, the UK, and Ireland through special access schemes or as an unlicensed medicinal product for patients who have not responded to standard anti-epileptic therapies.
