Overview

Canrenoic acid is a synthetic steroidal antimineralocorticoid and a monocarboxylic acid that acts as an aldosterone antagonist. It is not marketed directly but is used clinically in the form of its potassium salt (potassium canrenoate). Canrenoic acid functions as a prodrug and is metabolized to the active compound canrenone in the body. Its primary mechanism of action involves antagonism of the mineralocorticoid receptor (aldosterone receptor), leading to diuretic effects useful in conditions such as primary hyperaldosteronism and disorders related to excess aldosterone. Like spironolactone, it belongs to the spirolactone group of drugs[1][2][4].
