Overview

Canrenone is a steroidal antimineralocorticoid of the spirolactone group and an active metabolite of spironolactone. It acts as a competitive antagonist at the mineralocorticoid (aldosterone) receptor in the distal renal tubule, leading to increased sodium and water excretion while reducing potassium excretion. Canrenone is used primarily as a diuretic for conditions such as primary hyperaldosteronism, edematous states due to secondary hyperaldosteronism (e.g., heart failure), hepatic diseases, hypertension, and refractory edema associated with heart failure. It has also been found effective in treating hirsutism in women. Compared to spironolactone, canrenone is more potent as an antimineralocorticoid but less potent as an antiandrogen[1][2][3][4].
