Overview

CAP-1001 is an autologous cell therapy consisting of cardiosphere-derived cells (CDCs), which are a population of cardiac stem and progenitor cells. Developed by Capricor Therapeutics, CAP-1001 was the company's first clinical-stage candidate and was evaluated in the Phase I CADUCEUS trial for the treatment of patients with left ventricular dysfunction following a myocardial infarction. The therapy involves harvesting a small piece of the patient's own heart tissue via biopsy, expanding the CDCs in a laboratory setting, and then re-introducing them into the patient's coronary artery. CAP-1001 works primarily through paracrine signaling, releasing exosomes that contain regenerative factors to reduce inflammation, inhibit fibrosis, and promote the repair of damaged heart muscle. Following the completion of the CADUCEUS trial, Capricor transitioned its development efforts to CAP-1002, an allogeneic (off-the-shelf) version of the therapy, to overcome the manufacturing and logistical challenges associated with autologous cell production.
