Overview

Capecitabine Sandoz is a generic formulation of the antineoplastic agent capecitabine, an oral prodrug of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). Developed in association with research from the Het Nederlands Kanker Instituut-Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Ziekenhuis Stichting, it is primarily indicated for the treatment of breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and gastric cancer. Capecitabine is absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract and undergoes a three-step enzymatic conversion to its active form, 5-FU. The final conversion step is mediated by thymidine phosphorylase, an enzyme that is typically expressed at higher levels in tumor tissues than in normal tissues, thereby providing a degree of tumor-selective cytotoxicity. The active metabolite, 5-FU, inhibits thymidylate synthase and is incorporated into DNA and RNA, leading to the inhibition of cell proliferation and induction of apoptosis. Capecitabine Sandoz is used both as monotherapy and in combination with other chemotherapy agents.
