Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This drug is an **antiretroviral combination regimen** consisting of four agents: capravirine (a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, NNRTI), nelfinavir (a protease inhibitor), lamivudine (a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, NRTI), and zidovudine (another NRTI). Together, these medications are designed to inhibit HIV replication at multiple stages: capravirine blocks reverse transcriptase by a non-nucleoside mechanism, nelfinavir inhibits viral protease preventing processing of viral proteins, and both lamivudine and zidovudine inhibit reverse transcriptase as nucleoside analogues, blocking DNA synthesis. This combination was investigated for use in HIV-infected individuals—particularly those who failed initial combination therapy—providing broad and multi-targeted suppression of viral replication. Capravirine was developed by Agouron Pharmaceuticals and tested in clinical trials with this combination[3][8]. Nelfinavir is developed and manufactured by Agouron Pharmaceuticals and Abbott (now mainly Pfizer); lamivudine and zidovudine are manufactured by multiple companies, notably ViiV Healthcare (for Combivir).
