Overview

Caprine herpesvirus 1 (CpHV-1) is an alphaherpesvirus that primarily infects goats, causing genital disease in adults (vulvovaginitis or balanoposthitis) and systemic disease with high morbidity and mortality in kids. It is closely related to other animal alphaherpesviruses and shares biological similarities with human herpes simplex virus type 2. CpHV-1 has been used as a model for studying antiviral therapies against genital herpes in humans. In addition to its veterinary relevance, recent research has explored CpHV-1 as a potential oncolytic virus for cancer therapy due to its ability to selectively induce apoptosis in malignant mesothelioma cells without affecting normal human cells[6][8]. Mechanistically, the virus infects target cells leading to cell death via apoptosis and cell cycle arrest; it also synergizes with chemotherapeutic agents like cisplatin[6][8]. There are no commercially available vaccines yet, but experimental vaccines using inactivated CpHV-1 or recombinant viral vectors have shown protective efficacy against infection in goats[3][5].
