Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Capsaicin 8% patch is a high-concentration, prescription-only topical system containing synthetic capsaicin (8% w/w; 640 mcg/cm²; total of 179 mg per patch) designed for the treatment of neuropathic pain. Capsaicin is a selective agonist of the transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) channel, which is found on nociceptive nerve fibers. Activation of TRPV1 by high-dose capsaicin leads to an initial excitation followed by desensitization and reversible degeneration of epidermal nerve endings, resulting in reduced transmission of pain signals from the skin to the central nervous system. The primary indications are neuropathic pain associated with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in adults. The patch must be applied by healthcare professionals due to its potency and risk for local adverse effects such as burning or erythema[2][9][10].
