Overview
Capsulized fecal microbiota transfer (FMT) is a microbiome-based therapy being developed by Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) to improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, specifically those who have not achieved diabetes remission following bariatric surgery. The therapy involves the oral administration of capsules containing fecal material from lean, healthy donors. The mechanism of action is based on restoring gut microbiota diversity and increasing microbial gene richness (MGR), which is often low in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes. By altering the gut microbiome composition, the treatment aims to improve insulin sensitivity and metabolic health, potentially leading to better HbA1c levels.
