Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Captisol-enabled iohexol (CE-Iohexol) is a next-generation iodinated contrast agent developed by Ligand Pharmaceuticals to improve the safety profile of diagnostic imaging. It consists of the standard contrast agent iohexol formulated with Captisol (sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin), a chemically modified cyclodextrin excipient. This formulation is specifically designed to mitigate the risk of contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI), a common complication in patients with renal impairment undergoing procedures like CT scans or cardiac interventions. Preclinical data indicated a significant reduction in nephrotoxicity compared to standard iohexol, and Phase 1 clinical trials have demonstrated pharmacokinetic bioequivalence to the reference product Omnipaque.
