Overview

Captopril is an oral small molecule drug classified as an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It is primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), congestive heart failure, and to improve survival and reduce the risk of heart failure after a heart attack in patients with left ventricular dysfunction. Captopril is also indicated for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy in patients with type 1 diabetes and retinopathy. Its mechanism of action involves competitively inhibiting ACE, thereby blocking the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II—a potent vasoconstrictor—resulting in vasodilation, reduced blood pressure, decreased workload on the heart, and renal protection[1][2][3][4][5].
