Capvaxvie

Capvaxvie (V116) is a 21-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine developed by Merck, specifically designed to protect adults against the serotypes responsible for the majority of invasive pneumococcal disease. It contains capsular polysaccharides from 21 serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae (3, 6A, 7F, 8, 9N, 10A, 11A, 12F, 15A, 15C, 16F, 17F, 19A, 20A, 22F, 23A, 23B, 24F, 31, 33F, and 35B), each individually conjugated to the CRM197 carrier protein. The vaccine is unique for including 8 serotypes not covered by other currently licensed pneumococcal vaccines. In the MET-IH clinical trial led by the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Capvaxvie is used as a biological probe to evaluate whether metformin can restore immune homeostasis and improve vaccine-induced immune responses in individuals with a history of injection drug use and associated systemic inflammation or immune dysregulation.
