CAR-505

CAR-505 is an oral liquid formulation of rosuvastatin, a member of the statin class of lipid-lowering medications, developed by Carmel Biosciences. The drug is being developed using Carmel's proprietary formulation technology, which aims to provide stable liquid versions of drugs that are typically available only in solid oral formats. Rosuvastatin functions as a competitive inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in the mevalonate pathway for cholesterol synthesis. By inhibiting this enzyme in the liver, rosuvastatin decreases intracellular cholesterol concentrations, leading to an upregulation of LDL receptors and increased clearance of LDL cholesterol from the blood. CAR-505 is intended for the treatment of dyslipidemia and hypercholesterolemia, particularly in patient populations that have difficulty swallowing tablets or require precise liquid dosing. It has received Pre-IND feedback from the FDA and is currently in IND-enabling development.
