Overview

CAR-NK cells (APEL-expanded) are an investigational chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) engineered natural killer (NK) cell therapy manufactured using a specialized Albumin Polyvinylalcohol Essential Lipids (APEL) defined medium. This expansion process induces early metabolic reprogramming, resulting in a "stem-like" phenotype (CAR-NK stem) characterized by enlarged, highly active mitochondria and increased spare respiratory capacity (SRC). These modifications enhance metabolic fitness and flexibility, allowing the cells to resist terminal differentiation and exhaustion within the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Developed primarily by researchers at MD Anderson Cancer Center, this platform aims to improve the persistence and serial killing capacity of off-the-shelf NK cell therapies against both hematologic malignancies and solid tumors.
