Overview

This investigational therapeutic approach involves the use of Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy in combination with Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) for the treatment of refractory malignant pleural effusion (MPE) and malignant ascites (MA). Developed by the Affiliated Hospital of Jiangnan University, the treatment protocol utilizes a sequential administration strategy: IFN-γ is first injected into the pleural or peritoneal cavity to modulate the local tumor microenvironment and potentially enhance antigen presentation, followed by the infusion of CAR-T cells. The CAR-T cells are engineered to target specific tumor-associated antigens present in the malignant fluid. This regional delivery method aims to maximize the concentration of effector cells at the site of the disease while minimizing systemic toxicity. The therapy is currently being evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials for patients with advanced malignancies who have failed standard treatments.
