Overview

CAR22 T cells are a type of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy. They consist of genetically engineered T cells designed to express a CAR that specifically targets the CD22 protein, a B-cell surface molecule. CD22 is widely expressed in various B-cell malignancies, including acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). The therapy involves isolating T cells from a patient, genetically modifying them to recognize CD22, expanding these engineered T cells, and then reinfusing them into the patient. Once infused, these CAR T cells bind to CD22-expressing cancer cells, leading to their activation, proliferation, and subsequent cytotoxic destruction of the malignant cells. CAR22 T cells are being developed as a therapeutic option, particularly for patients who have relapsed after CD19-targeted CAR T-cell therapies, as CD22 expression is often retained in tumors that have lost CD19 expression. This approach aims to overcome antigen escape mechanisms that can lead to relapse with single-target CAR T-cell therapies.
