Overview

Caralluma fimbriata extract is a dietary supplement derived from the edible cactus *Caralluma fimbriata*, native to India and traditionally used as a famine food and appetite suppressant. The extract contains various bioactive compounds including pregnane glycosides, flavonoids, saponins, phenolic compounds, and other phytochemicals[6][8][10]. It is primarily marketed for weight management due to its purported ability to suppress appetite—possibly through modulation of hypothalamic ATP content in neurons—and reduce waist circumference[1][4][7]. Some studies suggest it may help decrease hunger levels and waist size but show limited or no significant effect on overall body weight or BMI[3][4][5]. Additional research has explored potential antidiabetic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypolipemic (lipid-lowering), hepatoprotective (liver-protecting), and anticancer properties[6][9]. The U.S. FDA recognizes it as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) for use in foods[2].
