Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Carbadox** is a synthetic antimicrobial and antiparasitic drug used exclusively in veterinary medicine, specifically for swine. Its primary indications are the control of swine dysentery (caused by Brachyspira hyodysenteriae), control of bacterial swine enteritis (including salmonellosis and necrotic enteritis due to Salmonella enterica), and as an aid in preventing infections by large roundworm (Ascaris suum) and nodular worm (Oesophagostomum). It is also used to improve feed efficiency and promote weight gain in growing pigs[1][3][8]. Carbadox acts by interfering with bacterial DNA synthesis, likely through DNA alkylation, which leads to prevention of bacterial growth and cell death. It has no analogs in human medicine and is not considered important for human antimicrobial therapy[3][5]. Carbadox is genotoxic, mutagenic, and has been demonstrated to be carcinogenic and teratogenic in animal studies[1][5][7].
