carbamazepine + oxcarbazepine

Carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine are both anticonvulsant medications primarily used to treat partial (focal) seizures in epilepsy. Carbamazepine is also indicated for trigeminal neuralgia and bipolar I disorder, while oxcarbazepine is mainly used for seizure control. Oxcarbazepine is a 10-keto derivative of carbamazepine, developed to reduce side effects associated with carbamazepine metabolites. Both drugs act by inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels in neuronal membranes, stabilizing hyperexcited nerve cells and reducing abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Oxcarbazepine also modulates certain calcium channels differently from carbamazepine[1][4][5][8]. Carbamazepine is metabolized via the cytochrome P450 system, whereas oxcarbazepine undergoes reductive metabolism with minimal involvement of hepatic enzymes[5]. Both drugs are available as generics and under several brand names.
