home tooth whitening gel (MFP desensitizer) is a combination dental formulation consisting of carbamide peroxide as the active bleaching agent and sodium monofluorophosphate (MFP) as a desensitizing agent. Carbamide peroxide acts as a precursor to hydrogen peroxide, which penetrates the tooth enamel and dentin to oxidize and break down organic chromogens (pigments), thereby achieving a whitening effect. Sodium monofluorophosphate is included to mitigate post-bleaching tooth sensitivity, a common side effect of peroxide-based whitening. It works by releasing fluoride ions that promote the remineralization of hydroxyapatite and help occlude dentinal tubules, reducing the fluid movement that triggers nerve sensitivity. This specific formulation is being evaluated in clinical trials by the Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital for the treatment of tooth staining.
