Overview

Carbendazim is a broad-spectrum systemic fungicide of the benzimidazole class. It is primarily used in agriculture to control fungal diseases in a wide variety of crops including cereals and fruits such as citrus and bananas[4][5]. Carbendazim acts by binding to β-tubulin in fungi and suppressing microtubule assembly dynamics[1][8], thereby inhibiting mitosis. In mammalian cells and cancer cell lines it also suppresses microtubule dynamic instability without significant depolymerization[6], leading to mitotic arrest. Although its exact binding site on tubulin differs from other benzimidazole compounds (not competing with colchicine or vinblastine), its antimitotic effect underlies both its antifungal activity and potential antineoplastic properties[1][6]. It has been investigated for use in lymphoma and solid tumors but is mainly known as an agricultural chemical rather than a pharmaceutical agent[2].
