Carbetocin is a long-acting synthetic analogue of oxytocin used to prevent and control postpartum hemorrhage, particularly after cesarean section. It acts as an agonist at the oxytocin receptor on uterine smooth muscle, inducing rhythmic contractions and increasing uterine tone. Carbetocin has a longer duration of action than oxytocin, allowing for single-dose administration immediately following delivery. Its mechanism involves selective activation of the oxytocin receptor (OXTR), specifically engaging the Gq pathway to promote uterine contraction and reduce bleeding risk. Carbetocin does not affect non-pregnant uteri due to low receptor expression outside pregnancy. Developed and manufactured by Ferring.
