Overview

Carbetocin + tranexamic acid is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used in the context of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). Carbetocin is a long-acting synthetic oxytocin analog and acts as a uterotonic, stimulating uterine contractions to prevent or reduce bleeding after childbirth. Tranexamic acid is an antifibrinolytic agent that inhibits fibrinolysis by blocking lysine binding sites on plasminogen molecules, thereby stabilizing blood clots and reducing bleeding. Both drugs are included in the World Health Organization's Model List of Essential Medicines for reproductive health. Carbetocin is primarily indicated for PPH prevention, while tranexamic acid is recommended for PPH treatment; their combined use targets both uterine atony and excessive fibrinolysis to optimize maternal outcomes in high-risk settings[2][3][6][8].
