Carbidopa + levodopa + entacapone is a fixed-dose combination oral medication used to treat Parkinson's disease. It combines three active ingredients with complementary mechanisms of action. Levodopa is converted into dopamine in the brain, helping to alleviate motor symptoms caused by dopamine deficiency in Parkinson’s disease. Carbidopa inhibits dopa decarboxylase, preventing the peripheral breakdown of levodopa and increasing its availability to the brain. Entacapone inhibits catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), further reducing peripheral metabolism of levodopa and prolonging its effect. The combination improves symptom control and reduces "wearing-off" effects compared to levodopa/carbidopa alone[1][3][8]. Developed for convenience, it reduces pill burden for patients requiring all three agents.
