Overview

Carbinoxamine is a first-generation antihistamine of the ethanolamine class used to treat symptoms associated with allergies and allergic reactions. It is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, vasomotor rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis due to inhalant allergens and foods, mild uncomplicated allergic skin manifestations (such as urticaria and angioedema), dermatographism, as adjunctive therapy for anaphylactic reactions (with epinephrine), and to ameliorate the severity of allergic reactions to blood or plasma[1][5][7]. Carbinoxamine works by competitively antagonizing histamine at histamine H1 receptors in various tissues including the gastrointestinal tract, blood vessels, respiratory tract, uterus, and bronchial muscle[3][5][6]. It also has significant antimuscarinic (anticholinergic) activity that contributes to its drying effects and sedative properties[3][5]. The drug may also be used off-label for motion sickness-related nausea or drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms.
