Overview

Karbinal ER is an extended-release oral suspension formulation of **carbinoxamine maleate**, a first-generation ethanolamine class antihistamine. It acts as a **histamine H1 receptor antagonist**, competitively inhibiting the actions of endogenous histamine at H1 receptors on effector cells in the gastrointestinal tract, blood vessels, and respiratory tract, thereby reducing symptoms of allergic reactions such as nasal and ocular symptoms, skin manifestations, and vasomotor rhinitis. In addition to its antihistaminic effects, carbinoxamine exhibits **anticholinergic (drying)** and mild **sedative** properties. It is approved for use in adults and children aged 2 years and older for the treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, vasomotor rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, mild uncomplicated urticaria and angioedema, dermatographism, as adjunctive therapy for anaphylaxis after acute management, and to ameliorate allergic reactions to blood or plasma products. The oral suspension provides sustained antihistaminic action with twice-daily dosing.
