Carbogen is a medical gas mixture composed of 95–98% oxygen and 2–5% carbon dioxide. It is used as an inhalant to increase tissue oxygenation and cerebral blood flow by raising blood carbon dioxide levels, which leads to vasodilation. Carbogen has been investigated for its radiosensitizing properties in cancer therapy, particularly as an adjunct to radiotherapy, and for acute treatment in conditions such as sudden sensorineural hearing loss (where a vascular cause is suspected), seizures in epilepsy patients, central retinal artery occlusion, stroke, and other indications. Its effectiveness remains unproven or experimental for most uses[1][2][5][8].
