Overview

Carbomer is a high-molecular-weight cross-linked polymer of acrylic acid. In pharmaceutical applications, particularly ophthalmology, it serves as a synthetic tear substitute to manage dry eye syndrome (keratoconjunctivitis sicca). Its therapeutic efficacy stems from its mucoadhesive properties, which allow it to bind to the mucin layer of the ocular surface, and its high viscosity, which ensures a prolonged residence time compared to aqueous drops. By forming a protective and lubricating film, carbomer stabilizes the tear film, reduces tear evaporation, and alleviates symptoms of ocular irritation and dryness. It is commonly formulated as a sterile ophthalmic gel and is also widely used as an excipient (thickening agent) in various topical creams and lotions.
