Carbomer 980 is a synthetic, high molecular weight, crosslinked polyacrylic acid polymer used primarily as a thickening, suspending, and stabilizing agent in pharmaceutical and personal care formulations. It is widely employed as an excipient to create clear gels or hydroalcoholic gels and creams due to its efficient rheology-modifying properties[1][2][4]. In pharmaceuticals, it serves as an inactive ingredient in artificial tears for the treatment of dry eyes and has been tested for antiulcerogenic activity[3][5]. Carbomer 980 may also be formulated with other agents such as hydroxypropyl methylcellulose for ocular lubrication. Its mechanism of action is physical—providing viscosity and mucoadhesion rather than pharmacological receptor targeting.
