carbomycin

Carbomycin is a crystalline macrolide antibiotic derived from the bacterium Streptomyces halstedii. It exhibits strong inhibitory activity against Gram-positive bacteria and certain Mycoplasma strains. Carbomycin acts by binding to the large subunit of bacterial ribosomes, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible organisms. It was historically used primarily in veterinary medicine, especially for treating and preventing chronic respiratory diseases in poultry caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum and secondary bacterial infections such as Escherichia coli. The structure of carbomycin was first elucidated by Robert Woodward in 1957 and later revised in 1965[1][2][3][5].
