Carbon-11 acetate is a radiopharmaceutical imaging agent used in positron emission tomography (PET) scans. It functions as a metabolic tracer, specifically as a substrate for fatty acid synthesis, a process that is significantly upregulated in certain malignancies, including prostate cancer. Because it is rapidly metabolized and cleared, it offers high-contrast imaging of pelvic tumors without the interference of urinary excretion often seen with FDG-PET. In clinical research led by Daniel Vaena, the tracer is being investigated for its ability to detect lesions and monitor therapeutic response to docetaxel in patients with castrate-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC).
