Carbon-11 butanol is a radiopharmaceutical imaging agent used as a positron emission tomography (PET) tracer. It consists of 1-butanol labeled with the radioactive isotope carbon-11. Unlike many PET tracers that bind to specific receptors or transporters, carbon-11 butanol is a freely diffusible tracer that distributes according to blood flow patterns. It is primarily used in research settings to measure regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), whole-body perfusion, and more recently, to investigate cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage pathways through the nasal mucosa in the context of Alzheimer's disease. Due to the short half-life of carbon-11 (approximately 20 minutes), it requires an on-site cyclotron for production and is typically used in academic and clinical research settings rather than as a commercially marketed pharmaceutical.
