Carbon-14 glucose is a radiolabeled analog of glucose where one or more carbon atoms are replaced by the radioactive isotope Carbon-14. It is primarily utilized as a metabolic tracer in biochemical research and clinical diagnostics. By incorporating the radioactive tracer, researchers can monitor the metabolic flux of glucose through pathways such as glycolysis, the pentose phosphate pathway, and the citric acid cycle. In oncology research, it is frequently used to study the metabolic reprogramming of cancer cells, including de novo lipid biosynthesis and energy metabolism under varying oxygen conditions (normoxia vs. anoxia). Clinically, C14-glucose has been historically used in diagnostic breath tests to detect small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) or carbohydrate malabsorption by measuring the expiration of 14CO2. However, in many clinical applications, it has been superseded by stable isotope tracers like Carbon-13 to avoid radiation exposure.
