This is a combination of carbon nanoparticles and methylene blue used primarily as tracers or localization agents in surgical oncology, especially for sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping and localization of nonpalpable breast lesions (NPBLs). Carbon nanoparticles serve as stable dyes that are less likely to diffuse within tissues, allowing for preoperative localization that can be maintained over days. Methylene blue is a readily available dye with rapid metabolism and diffusion properties, making it suitable for intraoperative use but requiring administration shortly before surgery. The combination leverages the stability of carbon nanoparticles with the vivid staining properties of methylene blue to improve accuracy in identifying target tissues during surgery. Both agents have demonstrated safety profiles in clinical use[2][8]. Mechanistically, these agents act as visual tracers rather than exerting pharmacological effects on molecular targets.
