Overview

Carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) are a diagnostic lymphatic mapping agent used primarily in oncological surgery to identify sentinel lymph nodes and visualize lymphatic drainage. The suspension consists of stable, chemically inert carbon particles with an average diameter of 21 nm. Due to their specific size, these nanoparticles selectively enter lymphatic capillaries, which have relatively large endothelial gaps (120–500 nm), while being excluded from blood capillaries, which have much tighter junctions (20–50 nm). Once injected peritumorally or submucosally, the particles migrate to and accumulate in the draining lymph nodes, staining them black. This visual contrast assists surgeons in performing precise lymphadenectomy and identifying metastatic nodes in various cancers, including gastric, colorectal, breast, and thyroid cancers.
