Overview

A combination of carbon nanoparticles and indocyanine green (ICG) forms a multifunctional nanoplatform primarily used for cancer imaging and therapy. Carbon nanoparticles serve as carriers that enhance the stability, tumor-targeting ability, and photothermal conversion efficiency of ICG—a near-infrared fluorescent dye approved for clinical imaging. This combination is utilized in sentinel lymph node mapping (notably in endometrial and thyroid cancers), intraoperative tumor visualization, dual-modal imaging (fluorescence/magnetic resonance), and photothermal or photodynamic therapy. The formulation improves the photostability of ICG, enables deeper tissue penetration for fluorescence-guided surgery, allows more accurate identification of metastatic nodes or sentinel lymph nodes compared to either agent alone, and can be engineered to deliver additional therapeutic effects such as calcium overload or glutathione depletion in tumors[2][3][5][6][9].
