Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Carbonized schizonepeta spikes (Schizonepetae Spica Carbonisata, also known as Jing Jie Sui Tan) is a traditional Chinese medicine preparation made by stir-frying the dried flowering spikes of *Schizonepeta tenuifolia* Briq. until they are carbonized. While raw schizonepeta spikes are traditionally used to dispel wind, relieve fever, and treat the common cold, the carbonization process alters the chemical profile of the herb, significantly enhancing its hemostatic (bleeding-arresting) properties. Carbonized schizonepeta spikes are primarily indicated for hemorrhagic conditions, such as hematemesis, metrorrhagia, hemafecia, and metrostaxis. Modern pharmacological studies suggest that the carbonization process generates novel carbon dots (CDs) and alters the volatile and nonvolatile chemical constituents, which collectively contribute to shortened bleeding and clotting times, potentially through platelet elevation and modulation of coagulation pathways.
