Overview

Carboplatin is a platinum-based chemotherapy drug classified as an alkylating agent. It was developed as a less toxic analogue of cisplatin and is primarily used to treat advanced ovarian cancer, but it is also indicated for other cancers including lung cancer, head and neck cancer, brain tumors, neuroblastoma, testicular cancer (especially seminomatous type), bladder cancer, breast cancer (including triple-negative), endometrial cancer, cervical cancer, Wilms' tumor in children, and retinoblastoma[1][2][3][4][5]. Carboplatin works by binding to DNA and forming intra- and inter-strand crosslinks through its reactive platinum complexes after intracellular activation. This inhibits DNA replication and transcription processes in rapidly dividing cells leading to cell death[4][6][7][8]. The drug is administered intravenously. Carboplatin was patented in 1972 and approved for medical use in 1989[5].
