Overview

This is a combination chemotherapy regimen consisting of three cytotoxic agents: carboplatin, epirubicin, and fluorouracil (5-fluorouracil). Carboplatin is a platinum-based compound that induces DNA crosslinking and apoptosis. Epirubicin is an anthracycline antibiotic that intercalates into DNA, inhibiting topoisomerase II and generating free radicals leading to cell death. Fluorouracil is an antimetabolite that inhibits thymidylate synthase, disrupting DNA synthesis. The ECarboF regimen has been studied primarily in metastatic hormone-refractory prostate cancer as well as advanced or metastatic breast cancer. It aims to provide effective tumor control with a toxicity profile considered manageable compared to regimens containing cisplatin[1][2][3][4][5].
