This combination therapy regimen consists of carboplatin, ABI-007 (Abraxane), and sorafenib. ABI-007 is an albumin-stabilized nanoparticle formulation of paclitaxel that functions as a microtubule stabilizer, inhibiting cell division. Carboplatin is a platinum-based antineoplastic agent that induces DNA cross-linking, leading to apoptosis. Sorafenib is a small-molecule multikinase inhibitor that targets Raf kinases (C-Raf, B-Raf) and various receptor tyrosine kinases involved in tumor growth and angiogenesis, including VEGFR and PDGFR. This specific combination was investigated in a Phase II clinical trial led by Mt. Sinai Medical Center, Miami, specifically for patients with stage III or IV metastatic malignant melanoma.
