Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Carboplatin + SonoCloud-9 is a combination therapy developed by the French medtech company CarThera for the treatment of glioblastoma. The approach pairs the systemic administration of carboplatin, a platinum-based chemotherapy agent, with the SonoCloud-9, an implantable medical device. The SonoCloud-9 is surgically placed into the skull and utilizes low-intensity pulsed ultrasound to transiently disrupt the blood-brain barrier (BBB) upon activation. This temporary opening allows therapeutic concentrations of carboplatin—which is typically restricted by the BBB—to reach the brain tumor tissue and the surrounding infiltrative zone. The combination is currently under evaluation in the pivotal Phase 3 SONOBIRD trial for patients with first-recurrence glioblastoma.
