Carboplatin (marketed by Teva as Carboplatino Teva) is a second-generation platinum-based antineoplastic agent. It is chemically described as cis-diammine(1,1-cyclobutanedicarboxylato)platinum(II). Its mechanism of action involves the formation of reactive platinum complexes that bind to DNA, creating intra-strand and inter-strand cross-links. These adducts inhibit DNA replication and transcription, triggering cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Carboplatin is widely used in the treatment of various malignancies, including ovarian carcinoma and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The Spanish Lung Cancer Group (Fundación GECP) has extensively utilized this specific Teva formulation in landmark clinical trials, such as the NADIM study, which evaluated chemo-immunotherapy combinations in the neoadjuvant setting for resectable NSCLC. Compared to cisplatin, carboplatin offers a reduced risk of nephrotoxicity and emesis, though it is associated with significant myelosuppression, particularly thrombocytopenia.
